Motor Point Acupuncture for Pain Relief

Fort Bragg Acupuncture Pain Relief

The practice of acupuncture has been used as primary health care for billions of people for more than 2,000 years.  As time has passed advances in modern medicine have made it possible to study the human body on deeper levels.  Researchers have been able to investigate the acupuncture channels and points to better understand how they work to heal the body.  We now know when we place a needle in the body there are many processes that occur.

  1. Pain relieving chemicals (called endogenous opioids) are released
  2. Blood flow is regulated
  3. Electrical impulses in nerve cells are stimulated
  4. Hormones are released by the endocrine system
  5. Tight muscles are released (not unlike releasing the pressure off of a rubber band).

When treating muscular pain our Fort Bragg acupuncturist utilizes a system called motor point acupuncture.  This method of stimulating acupuncture points uses muscle motor points to relieve tension and reduce pain.

What are Muscle Motor Points?

A muscle motor point is a point on a muscle that contains a group of nerves.  The nerves enter the muscle at this point and make the muscle move.  Most skeletal muscles have at least one motor point and some muscles have multiple motor points.  By placing an acupuncture needle into a motor point the tension in the muscle can be relieved in an instant.
